As summer approaches, many of us eagerly anticipate our vacations—a time to unwind, disconnect from work, and recharge. But what if this vacation could be more than just a break? What if it could bring you closer to your purpose with just the same amount of effort you'd typically put into holiday activities? Here’s a thought-provoking exercise to take with you and ask your friends about.
Finding your purpose: a simple exercise to do with friends
There's a powerful exercise, introduced by Simon Sinek, that I love using with my clients in my online career counseling practice to help hone in on their purpose. It involves having candid conversations with a few trusted friends to get their honest feedback. Here's how you can do it:
Step 1: Reach out to your friends
Pick 3-4 friends whose opinions you trust and respect. Give them a heads-up, you can say something like, "Hey, can I ask you a few questions that will help with my development? I'll explain more about it afterwards."
Step 2: Ask the key question
When you next meet up or chat online, start with this simple yet powerful question:
"Why are you friends with me?"
As they respond, jot down exactly what they say. It might be things like, "You're funny," "I enjoy your company," or "You're a great listener."
Step 3: Dig deeper
After they answer, follow up with, "What is it about me in particular that makes you want to be friends?" Write down their responses word-for-word again. Keep asking similar questions until they move from describing your traits (e.g., "You're funny") to explaining the impact you have on them (e.g., "You help me see things in a positive light.").
Step 4: Discover your impact
These impact comments are golden. They reflect your purpose in action and can give you amazing insights into how you influence and inspire those around you.
Why this matters
By the end of this exercise, you'll have a clearer picture of your unique qualities and the positive impact you have on your friends and the people around you. These insights are invaluable for shaping your purpose and understanding how you can continue to grow and contribute meaningfully to the lives of others.
So, as you head off on your vacation or take a break from the daily grind, try this simple exercise. Not only will it deepen your friendships, but it will also help you return with a renewed sense of purpose and direction.
